Fire Trucks Aren't Just Red Any More! The traditional fire truck color used to be red, but that's not the way is today any more! Look around at any structure fire scene and you will see fire engines that are yellow, lime green, and fire apparatus that is white with a combination of yellows, black and greens. Hundred foot ladder trucks meet above the fire and form a rainbow of firefighting colors. Every firefighter will tell you their fire department truck is the right color. Most firemen will gladly have a loud discussion with you about the color of fire trucks and having a red fire truck, while still the majority, has lost some of its ranking due to research and firefighter safety statistics. In the 1970's and 1980's studies showed that red fire trucks were more likely to be involved in accidents that would involve more firefighter injuries! Fire trucks in my fire company are yellow but we work alongside red fire trucks and the dedicated, motivated and well trained pump operators that get them there and home safely every day.
